The department of Flowers and Vegetables established in 2001 offers three popular agricultural specialties: Horticulture Technology (vegetables), which has been selected as the model specialty of Shandong province, Landscape Technology and Plant Protection. The number of students in this department has arrived at 557.

The department has a strong faculty, complete teaching equipments, laboratories for plants and plant physiology. Besides, we own soil and fertilizer analysis laboratory, plant protection laboratory, tissue culture laboratory, sample collection room, cultivation and breeding laboratory and multi-media room.

Horticulture technology, which now has applied undergraduate courses, has 34 professional teachers, including 5 professors, 8 vice-professors and 12 lecturers. And 5 of them have achieved doctor’s degree, 14 master’s degree.

Strong faculty makes the solid foundation for the teaching and scientific research. For several years, our teachers have applied 1 national research project, 4 provincial ones, published more than 90 professional papers. These achievements make our teaching and researching get common development.

The department has supporting teaching and practice bases. On campus, we have 1 greenhouse of high standards and open air practice base of 50 square meters. Outside, we set up cooperations with many flower and vegetables companies including Hongmei Horticulture Company, Wanfang Flower Company, Nongsheng Seed Company, Vegetable Association etc.to guarantee the students’ practice. Especially, the yearly held China ( Shouguang ) International Vegetables Sci- Tech fair provides a big platform for our students. What’s more, our performances on the exposition win the praise from both the committee and the tourists.

Because we work closely around the teaching center, implement comprehensively teaching philosophy “students as root, quality as soul ”, and stress hardly the personnel training mode“quality as core, ability as base, skills as keystone”, the department is surrounded with the good study atmosphere. Liu Wei,one student in Grade 2001, taking part in Master Entrance Examination in 2006, was enrolled by Yangzhou university as an bursary MD-PhD. Excellent theory and skillful operation ability lay foundation for students’ employment. Before graduation, the students are hired ahead of time.

Employment rate for graduates of several consecutive terms reach 98%. Graduates are in short supply.          

In April of 2005, when our general secretary Mr. Hu Jintao visited Shouguang --the contact point of education activity preserving the advanced nature of Party Members, he went to the students’ practical base --vegetable hi-tech demonstration garden to direct our work. This raises social popularity of  the department.

With concerns and supports from our leaders, with the faculty and students’ common efforts, we believe that our department would definitely specialize ourselves to train more professional and technical talents for the society, to serve for the regional economy construction and to contribute to the new socialist countryside building.
